Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) - Lot 357
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) Lagonda 4.5 Liters, 1934 Gouache on card stock 29 x 50 cm (signs of moisture, mold, and soiling) Notes: "The Lagonda factory was founded over sixty years ago in Staines, England, by the American Wilbur Gunn, who initially manufactured motorcycles and later tricycles. His first sports car dates from shortly before 1930. This 4.5-liter model, powered by a Meadows six-cylinder engine (88.5 x 120.6 mm), was introduced in 1934. A rugged and robust man’s car, it carried on some of the character of the old Bentleys. Maximum power was 115 CV at 3,200 rpm, and the top speed for this version exceeded 150 km/h. An improved version, designated the “Rapide,” a 4.5-liter Lagonda, won the 1936 24 Hours of Le Mans. Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus Publishing, 1965; our gouache is reproduced on p. 171.
