Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) - Lot 355
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) Alfa Romeo Tipo 6C 17/95 Supercharged 1.75-liter 1930-1931 Gouache on card stock 29 x 50 cm (signs of moisture, mold, and soiling) Notes: "Six cylinders, a twin-barrel Memini carburetor, a Roots supercharger, and two overhead camshafts gave this 1,752 cm³ (65 x 88 mm) engine over 100 CV of actual power. Its performance was astonishing for 1930: from a standing start, it reached 95 km/h in ten seconds and could exceed 160 km/h. The build quality matched the design, and the engine was a true gem; the delicacy of the intake manifold’s cooling fins—a masterpiece of foundry craftsmanship—still draws admiration from experts. Designed by engineer Jano and bodied by Zagato, the Alfa Romeo 17/95 is one of the great Italian classics. The question of whether or not it was superior to the Bugatti is far from settled, as both brands have their die-hard fans. Produced until 1934, the 17/95 served as the basis, starting in 1981, for the 140 CV 2800 six-cylinder model, many of which distinguished themselves in competition, notably at the 24 Hours of Le Mans: first place in 1981 with Lord Howe and Tim Birkin, first place in 1982 with Sommer and Chinetti, first place in 1983 with Sommer and Nuvolari, and first place in 1984 with Chinetti and Etancelin.” Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus Publishing, 1965; our gouache is reproduced on p. 149.
