Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) - Lot 354
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) Rolls-Royce Phantom III 1935–1939 Gouache on card stock 18 x 50 cm (signs of moisture, mold, and soiling) Notes: “In 1935, Rolls-Royce took a step as bold as the one it had taken in 1907 by introducing a new model that was likely ‘the best car of its time.’ The Phantom III had an all-aluminum 7,340 cm³ V12 engine (82.5 x 114 mm) with a central camshaft controlling overhead valves via rocker arms, which initially produced 165 CV at 3,000 rpm, and later approximately 180 CV. It was initially equipped with hydraulic tappets, but oil leaks forced the manufacturers to quickly revert to the mechanical system. Thanks to the engine’s compact design, it was possible to reduce the wheelbase by more than 20 cm compared to the Phantom II. It was the first Rolls-Royce to feature independent front-wheel suspension. Borrowing an idea from General Motors, the engineers took refinement a step further by housing the springs and shock absorbers in an oil bath. Its lightweight body allowed the Phantom III to reach a top speed of 100 mph (160 km/h) and to recapture the quietness and smoothness of the early Ghost models. [Here], a sharply styled interior coachbuilt in 1936 by H.-J. Mulliner.” Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus Publishing, 1965; our gouache reproduction appears on p. 199.
