Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) - Lot 351
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) 1924 Alfa Romeo P2 2-Liter Grand Prix Gouache on card stock 40 x 63 cm (signs of moisture, mold, and soiling) Notes: "The P2, designed by engineers Romeo and Jano, was one of the most brilliant race cars of all time. Hired by Alfa Romeo in September 1923, Jano completed his project in January 1924, and five months later his car won its first race. Its reign lasted six years. The inline eight-cylinder engine (61 x 85 mm, 1,987 cm³) consisted of two blocks. It had two valves per cylinder, controlled by two overhead camshafts. The compression ratio was 6 to 1; supercharging was provided by a Roots blower delivering a pressure of 0.75 kg/cm; the crankshaft rested on ten roller bearings. Power was transmitted via a dry multi-plate clutch, a four-speed transmission, and a driveshaft housed within a pushrod tube. Over the years, power output increased from 140 to 165 CV at 5,500 t/min. and the top speed increased from approximately 200 to 225 km/h." Bibliography: P. DUMONT, *Aux Temps Des Automobilistes*, Lazarus Publishing, 1965; our gouache reproduction appears on pp. 108 and 109.
