Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) - Lot 350
Pierre DUMONT (1920–1987) JAGUAR S.S. 1 1932 Gouache on card stock 42.5 x 62.5 cm (signs of moisture, mold, and soiling) Notes: "The S.S. 1 caused a sensation at the 1981 London Motor Show with its sleek, low-slung lines and its price of £310—an incredibly low price for a car of such appearance and such meticulous finish. Unfortunately, the long hood concealed a modest 2-liter side-valve engine—none other than the six-cylinder from the Standard Sixteen, producing 48 CV. After the admiration at the booth came disappointment on the road. Despite its poor performance, the S.S. 1 enjoyed some commercial success, which was confirmed when its displacement increased to 2,143 cm³ and then to 2.5 liters (60 CV, 115 km/h), and finally to 2,663 cm³ (68 CV). Year after year, the S.S. evolved, and while it was never more than the underpowered predecessor of today’s Jaguars, it already possessed—albeit with less performance—a traditional hallmark of the brand: it was sold at a lower price than many cars of inferior quality. The 2,663 cm³ engine, in its side-valve version, powered the first S.S. 90 sports roadsters, which became the S.S. 100 with a new overhead-valve cylinder head (102 CV.). The letters S.S. stand for Standard Swallow, a bodywork firm that began in 1922 by building sidecars." Bibliography: P.
