MACK - Lot 103
MACK Pewter car ornament depicting a bulldog for MACK tractor-trailers. Marked DESIGN PATENT 87931. Circa 1960. Mounted on an ashtray for two cigars. Height: 16 cm - Diameter: 18 cm (dents and oxidation). Notes: In 1917, the United States entered the war. It had approximately 4,500 Mack Trucks AC models. Legend has it that British soldiers were so impressed by this indestructible 6-metric-ton truck that they nicknamed it “Bulldog Mack.” The animal was adopted in 1922 as the brand’s emblem, but Mack the Bulldog (that’s his name) was designed by engineer Alfred Masury in 1932. Over time, the dog’s role evolved from a radiator ornament to a handle. Its ears and tail were shortened in 1979 to prevent accidents when opening the hood.
