WIER, Jean. ERASTUS, Thomas. Histoires, disputes et discours - Lot 207
WIER, Jean. ERASTUS, Thomas. Geneva, Jacques Chovet or Chouet, 1579. In-8, (16)-875-(39) pp. 17th-century basane, spine with 3 nerves, gilt title, box decorated with small gilt irons and fillets, marbled edges (binding tired, hinges split, quires out of order, marginal tear with small lack of lateral text on page 47, snag pp. 564, a few stains, pages miscalculated). Very rare. This Geneva edition of the work by Jean Wier (1515-1588), personal physician to the Duke of Cleves and opponent of the witch-hunt, is the only one complete with Erastus' dialogues and the entire text. A highly precise and curious treatise on demonology. The treatise by the doctor-theologian Thomas Erastus (Thomas Lieber) appears here for the first time in French with its own dated title, as well as several chapters by Jean Wier, all in continuous pagination. The work is said to have been translated from Latin by Jacques Grévin (1538-1570), physician to Marguerite de France, French man of the theater and poet, and friend of Ramus, Du Bellay and Ronsard. Guaita, 1087. Caillet, 11432. Absent from Dorbon.
