PERRAULT, Charles. Mémoires de Charles Perrault, De l'Académ - Lot 174
PERRAULT, Charles. Mémoires de Charles Perrault, De l'Académie Françoise, Et premier commis des batîments du Roi. Contenant Beaucoup de particularités et d'anecdotes intéressants du ministère de M. Colbert. Avignon, 1759. In-12. (3)-204 pp. Contemporary marbled half-fauve basane, smooth spine decorated with gilt fleurons and gilt title (boards a little rubbed, upper jaw a little split over 1 cm, but a fresh copy). Sought-after posthumous first edition. Published by the architect Pierre Patte (1723-1814) from the manuscripts and notes of the famous author of Contes. Only 2 entries in the CCFr (BnF). Important memoirs devoted to Perrault's public career, in particular his role with Colbert in the royal construction projects from the Louvre to Versailles, and his sometimes conflicting relations with the Académie and artistic circles. More than a writer, the work reveals a man of influence committed to the affirmation of French taste in architecture and the arts, and constitutes a first-rate historical account of the Grand Siècle. A good copy in its contemporary binding. Provenance: Ex-libris engraved with the arms of Bernard-Louis de Chauvelin and Agnès de Mazade. Chevalier de Chauvelin (1716-1773), marquis, military, served in the Italian Campaign (1733/35), then in the German army; colonel in 1743, he served in Italy under the Prince de Conti, Commander of Corsica in 1749 and ambassador to Turin in 1753. Married Agnès de Mazade in 1758. Tchemerzine V, 186.
