A good copy of an uncommon and sought-after edition. First foreign publication of the illustrated Fables. The illustration features a frontispiece title page by Romeyn de Hooghe - here without the engraved inscription on the column, thus conforming to the 1688 edition - and numerous mid-page vignettes etched in black by H(enrik) Causse. The vignettes are imitated from those of Fr. Chauveau, generally signed in full, sometimes only with the initials H. C. Provenances: Ex dono MS ancien (Victoire) Béthy Lyon, March 29, 1850. Ex libris MS 26 février 1870 Eugène Laurent, Vichy (on one endpaper). Ex libris MS old sepia ink, Ex dono MS "Au docteur Rénier", dated Laval, February 12, 1938 (opposite frontispiece).
