CZYNSKI, Jean. - Lot 99
CZYNSKI, Jean. Picturesque Russia. Histoire et tableau de la Russie. Paris, Chez Pilout successeur de Postel, 1837. 2 parts in one large volume in-4, 383 pp. in continuous pagination, with 2 title pages and 2 tables bound at the head of the work. Contemporary green half-basane, smooth spine decorated with gilt fillets and gilt scrolls, gilt title (some foxing to first few pages, slight wear to binding). Only one entry in the CCFr (BnF). Uncommon work, especially with so many plates showing buildings, landscapes, costumes, tribes or the daily life of the peoples of these regions, urban scenes, early 19th-century Russia. May be confused with other addresses containing fewer prints, as there is a publication in several fascicles, resulting in differences in existing copies. Illustrated with 58 plates, lithographs or engravings, in black, by Gatti, Lhuillier or Raimhein... Of Jewish origin, albeit Catholic, the Fourierist lawyer Jan Kazimierz Czynski, known as Jean Czynski (1801-1867), made an early attempt to draw attention to the fate of the Jews on the borders of the "Old Kingdom": by not separating this cause from that of the rest of the Polish nation, which was subject to Russia or Prussia, he stood out among the leading figures of Polish nationalism. Exiled to Paris, then Brussels and London, he was one of the most active militants in both causes, and a close friend of Polish historian Joachim Lelewel. Together with Zoé de Valmond, he founded the magazine Le Nouveau Monde, the organ of dissidents from the Harmonian Union.
