CUSTINE, Astolphe, marquis de. - Lot 98
CUSTINE, Astolphe, marquis de. Le Monde comme il est. Paris, Eugène Renduel, 1835. 2 volumes in-8, [4]-360 pp. and [4]-438 p., large margins. Contemporary glazed fawn half-calf with corners, spine ribbed and decorated with gilt roulettes and fillets, cold fillets, gilt title and tomaison, gilt and brown fillets and roulettes, marbled endpapers and edges (some foxing, lacks at the top of the spines, slight wear, trace of label at the top of the first plate in volume 1, small lack in the lower margin of p. 167-8 in volume 1). Unique edition of Custine's masterpiece, which caused controversy at the time of its publication. A dark, realistic novel, also known as "Le monde tel qu'il est" ("The world as it is"). A satirical exploration of European society at the time, with sharp political observations on the culture and mores of an era of social tensions - particularly in Russia, whose despotism he criticized. Baudelaire considers him the inventor of the ugly girl character in literature. Scorned by Apponyi, "Tableau d'une société pourrie jusqu'à la moelle, d'une société sans foi, sans loi, sans croyance, sans remords et sans plaisir..." (Vingt-cinq ans à Paris, his memoirs). Copy of the Duc d'Uzès. Library of the Duc d'Uzès at the Château de Bonnelles (Yvelines), with engraved ex libris and cold-stamped cancel on the title page. Emmanuel de Crussol d'Uzès (1842-1872), soldier and politician, creator of the famous Bonnelles Rally. The château was built in 1849 for Duke Giraud d'Uzès by architects Froelicher and Parent.
