18th century CHAMPAGNE POETRY. - Lot 91
18th century CHAMPAGNE POETRY. Reunion of 2 titles in the spirit of Rousseau in a contemporary binding. Small in-8. Rooted fawn calf, smooth ornate spine, gilt roulette framing the boards (slight rubbing, one title page and a few ff soiled and with edges damaged and restored). CERUTTI. The gardens of Betz, built by Madame Brignolé, Princess of Monaco and mistress of the Prince de Condé, between 1780 and 1789 formed a "parc à fabriques" or "desert", created in part thanks to Hubert Robert and the Duc d'Harcourt. Cerutti visited them in 1785 and composed this poem as an entertainment, recounting a walk in which the "fabriques" and their features are described. The most detailed and comprehensive account of this important English garden, which was abandoned during the French Revolution. Although intended to remain private, the poem finally appeared shortly before the author's death. With numerous important footnotes on the gardens. Marked "Second Edition", although printed in January 1792, like the first. Ganay 538. Very rare piece with a warning from the author's sister, who follows this singular piece with some of her brother's poetry. Very rare. Only 2 entries in the CCFr. ROUSSEAUISME. PASTORAL POETRY.
