BRUEYS, David-Augustin de. Histoire du fanatisme de nostre temps. et le dessein que l'on avoit de soulever en France les mécontens des calvinistes. Second edition. A Montpellier, chez Jean Martel, 1709-1713. 4 volumes in 2 volumes in-12, frontispiece, (12) ff, 271 pp; (21) ff, 188 pp, (2) ff +(6) ff, 306 pp, (2) ff; 353 pp, (2) ff. Contemporary mottled tan basane, ribbed spine, gilt title and gilt stamps, gilt fleurons and gilt fillets, mottled edges (corners dulled, small epidermal marks on boards, some leaves slightly browned). A good copy of this polemical work against Protestants by David-Auguste de Brueys (1640-1723), a former minister who converted to Catholicism under the influence of Bossuet and became a parish priest in Montpellier. Based on the history of the troubles in the Cévennes, this critical and acerbic portrayal of religious fanaticism was first published in 1692; our edition is an addition to the original. Adorned with a black woodcut frontispiece signed Bojan, Toulouse. Black stamp: "Cartvsiae Villenovae" on the titles.
