ANSON, Georges, Lord. - Lot 71
ANSON, Georges, Lord. A Voyage round the world in the years MDCCXL... London, John and paul Knapton, 1749. Fort in-4. Contemporary fawn basane, spine ribbed and decorated (binding very rubbed but interior still fresh). Edition published one year after the original of this important 18th-century English circumnavigation of Brazil and Patagonia, with important information on Argentina, Peru, Mexico and China. Organized by the British government against the Spanish in America, Admiral Anson's expedition set out from St. Helena, sailed to Madeira, then crossed the Atlantic to Brazil... After rounding the southern continent, the ships crossed to the Mariana Islands, Canton, then returned via Cape Town. Despite numerous losses, the voyage proved to be of great scientific importance, with a wealth of nautical and natural observations, notably on the value of citrus fruits in the fight against scurvy. Illustrated with beautiful fold-out black etched maps and views. Chadenat, 4170 (for the French edition).
