MANUSCRIT DE MÉDECINE by the famous GUILLOTIN, father of the - Lot 35
MANUSCRIT DE MÉDECINE by the famous GUILLOTIN, father of the guillotine.... Joseph-Ignace GUILLOTIN. (probably Reims), 1764. Fort petit in-4. (3)-130 hand-numbered ff. and (210) ff. of which a part in fine left blank. Modest, muted contemporary fawn basane (binding rubbed, some spotting and rubbing but intact, various stains notably on first few leaves, some foxing). Medical manuscript by Joseph-Ignace Guillotin, with his handwritten ex libris dated 1764 at the head of the work. A later-bound composite work, it is made up of several medical manuscripts, Latin copies or medical essays. Indeed, there are several hands. It seems fairly coherent that a sort of mutual aid system enabled impecunious students to access the contents of the works. Indeed, Guillotin completed his medical studies with the help of scholarships. This manuscript is mainly composed of writings on women's diseases. The last handwritten pages are expanded with various recipes and remedies. In 1763, Guillotin chose to study medicine, first in Reims, where studies were less onerous, then in Paris in 1768, thanks to scholarships. A doctor and a revolutionary, he was one of the drafters of the "cahier de doléances" of Paris and a deputy to the National Constituent Assembly, remaining the famous and unfortunate inventor of the "guillotine", while as a doctor and politician Joseph-Ignace was at the forefront of the French revolution. A youthful medical manuscript, voluminous, personal, intellectually coherent and bearing a direct mark of belonging, this work is a small historical testimony. There are very few preserved Guillotin archives or manuscripts, and no major manuscript collections comparable to those of other revolutionary figures. Generally speaking, only a few items relating to his activity as a deputy to the Estates General are to be found, and small fonds, with no particular density or subject matter, are to be found in public collections (France or New York and Philadelphia). CAPITAL PUNISHMENT. DEATH SENTENCE.
