In this major work on photography, the author defends Nicéphore Nièpce against Daguerre's "excessive glory" and develops the advances of photolithography. For the illustrations, Blanquart-Evrard had contacted the various inventors and obtained prints of their old photographs, lithographic stones and copperplates.
Emile Gripon (1825-1912), to whom the author dedicates this copy, was a graduate of the Ecole Normale Supérieure and professor of physics at the Lille Faculty of Science and the Ecole Centrale de Lille. He is renowned for his studies on acoustics and vibrations.
Provenance: acquired in the early 1980s, by descent.
