Paul Claude-Michel LE CARPENTIER (1787-1877) - Lot 57
Paul Claude-Michel LE CARPENTIER (1787-1877) Portrait of his wife and son in his studio Canvas Height : 58 cm Width : 72 cm Signed lower right and dated 1826 On the back a label: "Peint vers 1830 par (Paul) Carpentier... represente sa femme (née Gignoux) avec son enfant. In a studio on rue / de Lancry. Through the window, view of the heights of Bellevue and the Canal Saint Martin / Grand pere Carpentier who was a painter and student of David married his daughter to R. Rolland / The young girl painted on his canvas is therefore my great-grandmother / Signature of E. Denant. Denant 1948" Exhibition Salon of 1827, no. 653: Interior of a painting studio. Long overlooked, Carpentier was rediscovered with the Dallas Museum's purchase in November 2014 of Self-portrait of the artist at his easel with his family, dated 1833. It features his wife and daughter, seven years after our painting. Two latribunedelart.com articles have proposed an initial list of these known paintings (news briefs of December 3, 2014 and December 22, 2014), mainly portraits. A pupil of David, Le Carpentier chose here a theme of studio interiors often treated by Romantic painters, in the vein of interiors painted by Martin Drölling. The label on the stretcher at the back of our canvas indicates that the view through the window shows the heights of Belleville and the Canal Saint-Martin from the studio on rue de Lancry. The 1827 Salon catalog clearly indicates that he lived on this street.
