In 1860, Arthur de Gobineau (1816-1882), French diplomat, writer and politician, was sent on a six-month mission to Newfoundland to help delimit Franco-English cod fishing zones. In addition to Newfoundland, he visited Nova Scotia, Saint-Pierre et Miquelon and Cape Breton Island, a peregrination he recounts in this account published on his return.
