SNELGRAVE, Guillaume. COULANGE, A. Fr. D. de, trans. - Lot 241
SNELGRAVE, Guillaume. COULANGE, A. Fr. D. de, trans. Nouvelle relation de quelques endroits de Guinée, et du commerce d'esclaves qu'on y fait. A Amsterdam, au depens de la Compagnie, 1735. In-12, (12) ff (including title and dedication), 348 pp, title in red and black, one folding map. Contemporary marbled fawn basane, spine ribbed, red title page, gilt fleurons and double fillet, marbled edges (corners worn, spidering on spine and spine ends, small loss at upper head, tiny crack in margin of map towards tab). First uncommon French translation, one year after the English original. Testimony of a slave captain who traded and sailed in the Gulf of Guinea and West Africa. With a large copper-engraved folding map in black by d'Anville, illustrating the Guinea coast and dated 1729. His work, which he dedicated to the merchants of London, négocians à la côte de Guinée, is a study of the slave trade that he defended and practiced, considered today as a major historical source on the African slave markets bought and transported by Europeans in the early 18th century. Early signature on one endpaper: Carvathione (?). Chadenat, 5130. SLAVERY.
