CRAVEN, Elizabeth. - Lot 162
CRAVEN, Elizabeth. Voyage to the Crimea and Constantinople, in 1786, by Miladi Craven. New edition, with map & engravings. A Paris, chez Maradan, l'An IIe de la République Française (1793). In-8, (2) ff, 306 pp, (1) f. 7 black etchings including a folding map. Speckled fawn basane, ornate smooth spine, havana title-piece, blue-speckled yellow edges (spine and lower cover faded, slight rubbing, corners dull, very slight foxing). Illustrated with 7 folding plates in black, including a map of the Crimea engraved by Tardieu. Famous "Voyage de Lady Craven", published the same year as the English original. Our edition The Maradan edition is considered the true original in French, as it is the only one mentioned in the Journal des savants of June-July 1789. The London address is fictitious, a consequence of the Anglomania of the time. Elisabeth Berkeley, known as Lady Craven (1750-1828), who became Craven and then Margravine Morganatique d'Ansbach-Bayreuth, was an English woman of letters and an avid traveler.
