[LINASSI]. Ferdinand I. und Maria Anna Carolina im Küstenlande im September 1844. Trieste, Papsch & C. Buchdruckerei des Oesterreichischen Lloyd, 1845. Small folio (38.6 x 28.9 cm), (3) ff, IV-57 pp, 15 plates with serpents. Publisher's green bradel percaline, muted spine underlined by gilt fillets, gilt title to upper board (light rubbing to binding, foxing to text only, one plate loose, quires slightly unruly, plates 8, 12 and 13 missing). Superbly illustrated 19th-century German-Italian holiday book. Witness to the last fires of the Austrian monarchy in Italy on the eve of the Risorgimento, the book relates the official visit of Emperor Ferdinand I, and his wife Maria Anna Carolina, to Trieste in September 1844, when he was crowned King of Lombardy-Venetia in 1838. Only 3 copies at WorldCat. Unusually, this book (and perhaps only some of the copies) opens with a title in black and an ornate, autographed title in black, silver, gold and copper, printed on porcelain paper (banned in 1865, these papers or cards are very rare). First title framed and dry-stamped; the second illustrated with dry-stamped portraits in medallions: the Emperor and his wife in the center (gilded), Ernesto Il Ferreo, Giuseppe II, Leopoldo I, Leopoldo II, Carlo VI and Francesco I (white on silver background), coat of arms (silvered), the Quaternion of the Holy Roman Empire and a panoramic view of Trieste lithographed by Linassi & Cie (copper-plated). Text in printed German with lithographed frame, followed by 15 plates lithographed in black by Linassi after Dell'Acqua, Rieger, Tischbein, Pupilli, Moro, Margutti.... They are titled in Italian and German and framed. Apart from a lithographed black line plan (Plan de l'excursion de Leurs Altesses Royales de Trieste à Capodistria avec 10 navires...), the views describe the stages and festivities of the visit, with beautiful scenes watercolored and then gouached for detail, and highly enhanced with gum arabic, giving the images a gleaming appearance. Ex dono, or dedication, handwritten in the 19th century, probably in Hungarian or German on one of the endpapers (handwriting difficult to read). Boards: 1 - L'arrivo delle LL.
