CLARICI, Paolo Bartolomeo. - Lot 136
CLARICI, Paolo Bartolomeo.
Diocesi Padovana Con Tutta La Sua Estensione Ne Vicini Territori.
Padova, 1720.
A black copper-engraved map on three joined leaves (ca. 71 x 139 cm at the basin) (lower margin restored, soiling and small marginal cracks, slightly oxidized at the folds).
One of the few cartographic works by Paolo Bartolomeo Clarici.
This large map shows the entire extent of the diocese of Padua and surrounding territories, with detailed topographical rendering.
With rich Baroque ornamentation of religious figures, finely engraved title and dedication cartouches, allegorical scenes, vessels animating the Gulf of Venice, and an elegant compass rose.
Trained in Rome in the liberal arts and divine sciences, Paolo Bartolomeo Clarici (1664-1725) established himself in Padua as a merchant, while devoting himself to map drawing and botanical studies. Having fallen into the good graces of Padua's cardinal and bishop Giorgio Corner, he was ordained a priest at the age of 53 and produced the map of the diocese of Padua (1720), followed in 1721 by the topography of Polesine and Rovigo for doge Giovanni II Corner.
