GAVARNI. MONNIER. LAMY & others. COINDRE. - Lot 92
GAVARNI. MONNIER. LAMY & others. COINDRE. Les Français, costumes des principales provinces de la France... Paris, L. Curmer, (1842). Large in-4 (33 x 24 cm), title-frontispiece, 32 plates. Contemporary havana half-basin, smooth mute spine, chestnut cloth boards with cold-stamped frame (spine rubbed with light spotting and split at head and tail over 2 cm, scattered stains and foxing on pages printed in black and serpents, slight uniform oxidation for plates set in color, serpents sometimes missing, scattered discreet use defects). Rare work illustrating the characters of the French provinces under the July Monarchy. Only one copy in the CCFr (BnF). Beautiful title-frontispiece printed in black, watercolored with gouache and gum highlights; based on a woodcut by Gavarni used for Les Français peints par eux-mêmes (Curmer, 1840-1842). This is followed by 16 lithographed plates published in two states, one in black on chine appliqué and the other finely watercolored with gum highlights, making a total of 32 plates. The plates are accompanied by descriptive text in French, English, German and Spanish, printed in various colors. The picturesque iconography depicts a man from Trouville, Breton women, fishermen from Saint-Valery or Étretat, an Arlésienne, a Marseillaise, a grisette from Montpellier or Basques... drawn from life by Gavarni, Henry Monnier, Eugène Lami, Loubon, Geniole, Émy and lithographed by Pauquet and Coindre. S. Le Men, Les Français peints..., pp. 58, 165. Missing from Vicaire.
