GARNIER, F. A. - Lot 29
GARNIER, F. A. Atlas Sphéroïdal et Universel de Géographie. Drawn up with the help of official documents recently published in France and abroad. Paris, Veuve Jules Renouard, 1862. Large folio (61 x 45 cm), (14) ff. (not continued), 63 maps spread over 60 plates (pl. 24, 30, and 50 include 2 maps each). Contemporary green half-chagrin (worn, top board and title loose, but internally fresh). A very fine atlas. Complete with 63 maps, most of them double-page and all watercolored. A work of immediate success, which had a strong influence on Elisée Reclus. Opens with general plates devoted to cosmography, cartographic projections, the geography of the Ancients and advances in geographical knowledge, as well as thematic representations of winds, ocean currents, sea routes and more. The Spheroidal Atlas features maps of the globe, hemispheres, polar regions and the sphericity of the Earth, as well as general views of the continents (Asia, Africa, America, Oceania). The Universal Atlas then offers detailed maps by major region: Europe (general map, France, Spain, Italy, Belgium...), Asia (Siberia, Middle East, India, China, Japan), Africa (Maghreb, Algeria, Sahara, Egypt, Abyssinia), the Americas (North and South, with specific maps of the United States, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina...), and Oceania (Australia, New Zealand, Philippines, Polynesian archipelagos). Each section is preceded by a list of plates and explanatory notes.
