Paris, chez Courcier, (1809).
In-4 (25.3 x 20 cm), (1) f. (title), VIII-158 pp, (1) f. (avis rel.), 16 black engraved plates. Contemporary marbled basane, gilt roulette framing the boards (edges and corners rubbed, boards detached, spine missing, without 5 volumes of text in-8).
Second edition of the second circumnavigation by a Frenchman after Bougainville.
Led by the great sailor Etienne Marchand (1755-1793) from December 1790 to August 1792, aboard the Solide, it was a reputed success and led to the discovery of new islands unknown to France.
Its posthumous report was written by Claret de Fleurieu (1738-1810), a marine specialist who had also been part of the expedition. The work contains vital observations on navigation in Oceania.
Among the plates, the charts include 5 maps of Alaska and the northwest coast, 4 of the Marquesas Islands and one of Hawaii, while the China Sea chart incorporates important corrections.
Sabin, 44491 (for the original, 1798-1800).
