DELISLE, Guillaume.
With title page from JAILLOT, A.-H.
Large folio (53 x 37.5 cm), engraved title, table of maps, 91 maps, 4 double-page tables. Contemporary marbled basane, ribbed spine, red morocco title-piece, richly ornamented caissons, gilt roulette on the edges (binding very worn, some maps browned, rubbed or restored, some side margins short, author's name on our title-page scratched and date added).
Composite atlas by Guillaume Delisle featuring 91 maps published between 1700 and 1726, including 8 maps of the Americas: North America, Canada, Mexico, the West Indies, Terre Ferme, Peru, Brazil, Paraguay, Chile and notably the first state of the Carte de la Louisiane et du Cours du Mississipi, the first printed map to locate "Texas", missing a turning point in the cartographic history of the region.
"The most important mention for the history of Texas ... is the one that appears along the Trinity: Mission de los Tiejas, etablished in 1716. This phrase marked the first appearance of a form of the name Texas on a printed map, and thus Delisle received proper credit for establishing Texas as a geographical place name" (translated after Martin & Martin).
Delisle's map is considered one of the most important of the North American continent, forming the main source for the maps of the Mississippi subsequently published by Homann, Moll, Senex or Seutter.
"This map is at the origin of all subsequent maps of the Mississippi" (after J. G. Kohl); "One of the most important reference maps of the North American continent", (after William P. Cumming).
The atlas also includes a set of maps covering Europe, including Scandinavia, Denmark, Switzerland, France (including several provinces such as Picardy, Champagne, Normandy and Burgundy), the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Italy and the British Isles. It also extends to other regions of the world, with maps of Asia (Muscovy, Turkey, Arabia, Persia, India, China, Ceylon, Tartary) and Africa (Egypt, Barbary, Guinea, Congo, Abyssinia), complemented by a number of maps of ancient geography and the Middle Ages.
With a list of maps with publication dates for each, some of which have been updated by hand, an engraved title page for an atlas by Jaillot, and four tables bound at the end. Maps numbered and titled by hand on verso.
