Salvatore DALI (1904–1989) - Lot 10
Salvatore DALI (1904–1989) Standing Nude Young Woman, 1939 Pencil and ink on paper. Signed and dated lower right. 60 x 46 cm (surface wear and micro-tears) Authentication has been confirmed by Messrs. Nicolas and Olivier Descharnes. A certificate may be issued after the sale at the buyer’s expense. Beyond his automatic and surrealist drawings, Salvador Dalí proves himself a master of the pencil in the grand tradition of classical art! The realism of the faces of his wife Gala and the perfect rendering of objects illustrate his ironic admiration for illusionism, such as that practiced by the military and fire brigade painter Ernest Meissonnier. In our drawing dated 1939, we find Dalí’s favorite female physique: the young blonde with medium-length, wavy hair, disproportionately long legs, and large feet. The frontal pose is uninhibited, an exhibition of a body that fulfills the painter’s fantasies. There is another similar drawing, notably the standing nude executed on the painter’s palette and dated 1964.
