Frédérick Aubourg, author of the book: Alicia Penalba. Vers l’envol, Cohen & Cohen, Paris 2021. Alicia PENALBA (1913–1982) was an Argentine artist. She made her debut in Paris at the Académie de la Grande-Chaumière and spent the majority of her career in France. She expressed her art through various mediums, including ceramics, tapestry, sculpture, and jewelry. Indeed, she saw no separation between these practices, which she considered to stem from the same source and to respond to the same desire to transform life through a shared artistic vision. Deeply influenced by the landscapes of her childhood in Argentina, she draws upon them for her biomorphic forms, making her works unique. Through the use of gold and bronze, Penalba creates vertical forms, whose play of light and variations in patina give the whole a sense of movement. This artistic exploration reinforces the poetic dimension of her sculptural work. “I see no separation between my sculptures and my jewelry. Everything comes from the same source; the artistic meaning is the same. They respond to the same desire to change life.” Alicia Penalba
