The planned 12-issue run was announced in the November 1844 issue of A monthly list of new books, but publication was interrupted by the February Revolution (Lorenz, Catalogue général de la librairie française, 1871, p. 572). Our copy retains two of these complete covers, addressed to Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans in London (Part IV and Part VII, with list of subscribers on verso). However, the notices for the Bibliothèque nationale de France copies indicate that the work was not completed, and that 13 leaves of text, with frontispiece, dedication and 20 engraved plates is all that appeared. The author's dispatch is on an in-8 engraved leaflet, informing subscribers that he is obliged to reduce and complete the work with this delivery... He indicates, however, that a number of subscribers have asked him to continue the collection of royal portraits, and he proposes nine portraits to be produced, in return for a financial contribution.
