[Paris] [SAUGRAIN (Claude-Marin)] Les Curiositez de Paris, de Versailles, de Marly, de Vincennes, de Saint Cloud, et des environs... New edition. A Paris, chez Saugrain, 1723. 2 volumes in-12. [3] (of 4) lim. ff, 390 pp, [1] f. (notice) and p. [391]-719, [2] f. (approbation, privilege, notice to bookbinder); 8 pp. (bookseller's catalog). Contemporary pebbled havana calf, spine with 5 raised bands decorated with gilt fleurons, title page, gilt title, red edges (bindings rubbed, top board detached in vol. I, 1 introductory f. lacking in vol. 1, a pagination error in vol. 2, some oxidation and small discreet brown spots). Illustrated with 30 black copper-engraved plates, including a frontispiece with a plan of Lutetia (bound opposite page 1 of volume 1 in this copy), 20 of which are folding with some "panoramic" views. A sought-after work. The engravings illustrate emblematic buildings in and around Paris. These include the Church of Notre-Dame, La Samaritaine and the Pont Neuf, the facades of the Louvre, views of the Palais des Tuileries and the Palais Royal, the Hôtel de Ville, the Observatoire, the gates of Saint-Martin, Saint-Denis and Saint-Gervais, the Sorbonne, as well as the châteaux of Versailles, Marly, Vincennes, Saint-Germain and Saint-Cloud. Part of this work is commonly attributed to Georges-Louis Le Rouge, but he seems to have intervened on the text only after the death of the bookseller Saugrain, for the 1771 edition of Les Libraires associés.
