[Versailles] LEPAUTRE, Pierre or LE PAUTRE. DEMORTAIN, Gilles Plan général de la Ville & du Château de Versailles... Paris, Demortain, 1717. One plan engraved on 3 copperplates (121.8 x 84.7 cm, including margins), hand-colored. With the Bourbon coat of arms. On strong laid paper, folded after Louis XIV, King of France (1638-1715), wax profile by Antoine Benoist dit du Cercle (ca. 1705). Magnificent large-scale decorative plan of the city and château of Versailles by the king's architect Pierre Le Pautre. This plan offers a view of various sections of the Palace of Versailles. It encompasses the Chapelle, the Trianon and the Menagerie, and extends from the Ferme de la Gally in the north to the village of Montreuil and the Montagne de Montbauron in the south. Beyond the palace buildings, this plan meticulously showcases the gardens of Versailles. These include landscaped lawns and magnificent fountains and basins such as the Cabinets des Animaux, the Bain des Nymphes and the Bassins du Dragon, de Neptune, de Latone, d'Apollon and du Miroir, among others. To the east of the Place Dauphine and the Place du Marché is a lake called "l'Estang", which no longer exists. Similarly, a water reservoir in Montbauron is partly preserved, but has largely been replaced by municipal stadiums. Decorative details for this cartographic work have risen to the level of a royal commission. It begins with three elegant frames surrounding the map and text areas. These frames are adorned with royal coats of arms, allegorical representations and allusions to the sun god, cherubs, a fountain... It features a magnificent title cartouche adorned with a medallion depicting King Louis XIV.
