In-folio (43 x 30 cm), VIII pp. one map bound in 30 sections pasted on XXX large in folio sheets of thick laid paper with printed frame. Contemporary speckled fawn calf, ornate smooth spine, chestnut morocco basane title-piece, red edges (edges and corners worn, tail cap torn off, upper jaw split by a few centimeters, very slight foxing, small marginal tears on pages 9 and 10, slight oxidation of the engraved laid paper, a bookplate probably redacted with paper pasted to the title). Rare and beautiful framed wall plan of Paris and its surroundings, engraved on copper in black by Jaillot and presented in the form of an atlas. It consists of a title page, an alphabetical table of streets and 30 parts folded in half and mounted on larger sheets. The first state of this plan was published in one piece in 1777, based on plans of the twenty districts of Paris, originally published between 1772 and 1774. As they were not designed to be assembled, they do not fit together perfectly to form the general map. Here, they have been carefully cut and mounted, which explains the unusual cuts and joints visible on some of the map sheets. The fourth sheet of the atlas bears the date 1777. The original engraving has been updated in several places. Provenances: Beautiful muted bookplate depicting a large allegorical scene, etched in black by Chedel (1705-1783), with motto Suadente Minerva (unidentified) - i.e. "at the request of Minerva", probably taken from the verse exhorting us to favor wisdom over the vanities of the world. Large rocaille-style bookplate engraved in black and watercolored, pasted on the title: initial S for Stuart (without precise identification in the genealogy) with crowns and the various quarters of the Stuart coat of arms in spandrels. Boutier, [302], 322-323.
