GAVARD, Charles. CHAMPIN - Lot 131
GAVARD, Charles. CHAMPIN View of Paris drawn with a diagraph by Gavard, inventor of the the instrument. [Paris, chez Gavard, Engelmann, Septembre 1832]. Sheet (53 x 72.5 cm). Large view lithographed in black then lightly watercolored at the time (42 x 63.5 cm) fixed on paper (lower margin a little short and slightly creased with small lack of publisher's name and date but good copy remained fresh). Rare. Preceding his famous prints for the Galeries historiques de Versailles, this view is one of the earliest in the output of Charles Gavard (1794-1871), polytechnic engineer, lithographer and print publisher. He played a key role in the early days of mechanical reproduction with his 1831 diagraphe pantographe Gavard process, which he perfected using the pantograph and Wollaston's 1804 invention based on the camera lucida principle. View of the Seine, at the Pont des Arts between the Institut and the Louvre, finely lithographed by Jean-Jacques Champin, a watercolor painter of the Romantic movement, close to Charles Nodier and various artistic and literary personalities.
