FICHOT, Michel Charles - Lot 130
FICHOT, Michel Charles Paris on fire. Night of May 24-25, 1871. Martinet, (1871). Very large lithograph mounted on heavy cardboard, printed in three tones with gouache and gum highlights (54 x 86 cm on 63 x 96 cm sheet) (discrete, small losses on the repainted plate, slight wetness and soiling in the margins, faded). Large view of Paris on the night of May 24-25, 1871, marked by the fires that broke out during the last days of the Commune. Public buildings and neighborhoods were destroyed or severely damaged, marking one of the most dramatic episodes in the city's urban history. The scene depicts Paris, between May 22nd and 26th 1871, from a bird's-eye view of the Place de la Concorde, dominated by the burning Tuileries Palace in the foreground. Behind it are the Carrousel triumphal arch and the Louvre, part of which is also in flames. Fires spread along the Rue de Rivoli, while on the other side of the Seine, the Palais d'Orsay and the Palais de la Légion d'Honneur were also hit. In the background, the Hôtel de Ville is completely engulfed in flames, while Notre-Dame remains intact; the Préfecture de Police burns at its feet, but the spire of the Sainte-Chapelle still stands, miraculously spared. Farther away, fires can be seen at Porte Saint-Martin and La Villette, while gunboats sail the Seine. SECOND EMPIRE. FIRE AT THE TUILERIES PALACE. COMMUNE.
