DE FER, Nicolas - Lot 124
DE FER, Nicolas Plan de la ville, cité, université et faubourgs de Paris. Amsterdam, Chez Jean Covens et Corneille Mortier, 1705. Sheet in plano. Large plan engraved on copper in black on laid paper (ca. 63 x 95 cm), then watercolored in ink at the time (slight central fold). Plan of Paris by Nicolas de Fer adorned with four elegant cartouches illustrating the main monuments of Paris, such as Notre-Dame, the Sorbonne, the Louvre and the Hôtel de Ville. Rose des vents. Dedicated to the Dauphin Louis de France. On the left is the alphabetical table of streets, and on the right that of religious buildings, colleges, hotels, palaces and bridges. Squared from A to L and from 1 to 14, it is extremely easy to use, as the Mercure de France points out, thanks to its cross-reference table and its grid for easily estimating distances. De Fer was one of the first to include geographical coordinates, and his modern approach has contributed greatly to the success of this map, which has become a benchmark.
