SOINEL, Gaston. [Circa 1900-1910] - Lot 94
SOINEL, Gaston. [Circa 1900-1910] Large-scale project for a pleasure estate. Two drawings. a) Cross-section of collective living room. Pen, red ink, watercolor and wash. Marginal tears, including a small loss at lower right. Title at top of drawing: "Les Jardins d'Académus - Projet de Maison de Plaisance - Séjour Collectif". Cross-section" at bottom of drawing. Scale at bottom left. Signed lower right: "Dressé par l'Architecte soussigné, Gaston Soinel". b) General plan. Pen, China ink, watercolor and wash. Marginal tearing, notably at lower edge (small tears) and wetness at lower left corner. Title top left: "Les Jardins d'Académus"; top right: "Projet de Maison de Plaisance"; and bottom: "Plan d'ensemble". Scale at bottom left: "Scale 0.002m/m per Metre". Signed lower right: "Dressé par l'Architecte soussigné, Gaston Soinel". The vast pleasure house is at the center of the plan. Surrounding it: circus-garage, small quinconces, shed, courtyard, stables, fountain named "Thetis plunges Achilles into the Styx", traffic circle for the bandstand and traffic circle for the observatory. At the top of the plan: twelve villas; on the left: a large pool; on the right: a rustic zoological park. The whole is enclosed, with a main entrance opening onto a courtyard of honor facing the pleasure house; on either side of this courtyard: formal flowerbeds. To the left and right: tennis courts, greenhouses and the ladies' and gentlemen's groves. [Last sentence removed]. Extensive project for a major pleasure house or "folie" on a large holiday estate, whose name refers to the gardens of Academos in Athens, the site of Plato's Academy. This is probably an unrealized project, or one that the architect presented freely to promoters.
