MELLING, Antoine Ignace - Lot 84
MELLING, Antoine Ignace Set of four landscapes of the Lyonnais and Isère regions. [s.l., s.d. - ca. 1819-1822]. 4 drawings (approx. 25 x 36 each), graphite on paper. Set of four landscapes of the Lyonnais and Isère rivers by topographical draftsman, painter and architect Antoine Ignace Melling (Karlsruhe 1763 - 1831 Paris). These include a view of the confluence of the Seine and Rhône rivers near the village of La Mulatière, a view of part of the Saint-Irénée aqueducts, a continuation of the Chanopost aqueducts and a view taken towards the valley from the opening of the Sassenage cave. Provenance: Paris, Galerie Prouté, autumn 1987, cat. nos. 107, 112, 113 and 114. Antoine-Ignace Melling was one of the most remarkable traveler-artists of his time. Born into a Lorraine family, he spent eighteen years in Constantinople in the service of Sultana Hadisch, an experience that contributed greatly to his reputation. A tireless traveler, he also visited Italy, Egypt and France, exhibiting regularly at the Salon and enjoying a solid reputation in Europe. Landscape painter for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, then painter to the King's Cabinet under Louis XVIII, he devoted himself to the precise, picturesque depiction of landscapes and monuments. His views of the Lyonnais and Dauphiné regions, such as the Roman aqueduct on the Giers or the entrance to the Sassenage cave, testify to his interest in historical and natural sites, which he rendered with topographical rigor and romantic sensitivity.
