LEQUEU, Jean-Jacques - Lot 83
LEQUEU, Jean-Jacques Deuxième Projet d'un grand Pavillon à la romainne (sic), programme donné aux Elèves d'architecture de l'académie de Rouen, pour prix en l'année 1776. Paris, 1781. One watercolor (33.8 x 92.8 cm). Beautiful original watercolor by Jean-Jacques Lequeu (1757-1826), architect and draftsman. He studied under the painter Jean-Baptiste Descamps and the architect Le Brument at the School of Drawing, Painting and Architecture in his native Rouen, where he won several prizes, notably in 1776, the date shown on our watercolor. Perhaps it was his drawing that enabled him to win this prize (?). In 1779, he moved to Paris and became a pupil of Jacques-Germain Soufflot at the Académie d'architecture, joining his studio where he worked with François Soufflot le Romain, a relative of the great architect, on the project for the church of Sainte-Geneviève (today's Pantheon). For the garden of Secretary of State Henri-Léonard Bertin in Chatou (Yvelines), Lequeu designed a Chinese pavilion, and is said to have completed the château on the same estate, begun by Soufflot in 1779. Almost all the information we have on the life and work of the architect Jean-Jacques Lequeu comes from his own collection of papers and drawings, which he donated to the Bibliothèque Royale in 1825 and which is currently housed in the Cabinet des Estampes of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France.
