Large folio. (41) ff. with a large hors-texte plan and 20 engraved half- and full-page maps. Contemporary spotted havana calf, spine ribbed and decorated with gilt fleurons, gilt title (restorations to the binding, damp stains to the lower right-hand corner of a few quires, a few stains and pips, inner spine partly loose, two engravings lacking). Rare atlas of Paris and first map by districts. Drawn up by Jean (II) La Caille (1645-1723), then printer-librarian to the police, it precisely describes the city's new 20 districts (each with a finely engraved plan and a list of streets, places etc.) according to the new administrative division decided by Louis XIV in 1702. In order to "establish an exact police force, to facilitate the execution of public order regulations", the city is described in minute detail, even the lanterns are indicated... The work is peppered with a number of antique engravings mounted in various places, mainly unusual black-engraved 17th-century or contemporary views of Paris by Perelle or Nicolas Poilly, i.e. 13 etchings (cut short) mixed with 7 antique engravings of animals or small figures; 4 large engravings of still lifes or scenes from decorative arts tables on the flyleaves, as well as 2 landscapes by Chiboust and Francisque, by Drevet. Copy does not include the section on garbage collection by district. The missing maps are those for the Palais Royal and the St Benoist district. Ex libris engraved with arms (unidentified) on the front flyleaf. Brunet, II, 615. Boutier, 176-177.
