Bléquette, was originally from (both lie in separate graves, close to each other). each other). Our project is more likely a burial project for his father, Jonas Vitta (1820- 1892), who commissioned Jean Camille Formigé to build his villa "La Sapinière" in Évianles- Bains the year of his death (Joseph Vitta had Formigé complete the construction and had the villa decorated by leading artists of the time). [FORMIGÉ, Jean Camille]. Tomb projects for the painter Jules Laurens. Three drawings. The three drawings presented here concern three tomb designs for the painter Jules Laurens, by the same architect (most likely Jean Camille Formigé). Born in Carpentras, Jules-Joseph-Auguste Laurens (1825-1901) was a pupil at the École des Beaux-arts in Paris and trained in Paul Delaroche's studio. Jules Laurens' work is marked by his interest in oriental subjects. He took part in scientific missions to Turkey, Greece and Persia, from which he brought back numerous drawings. In Paris, he was a regular participant in the Salon. Jean Camille Formigé and Jules Laurens were very close. a) Graphite and watercolor on paper. 29.5 x 47.1 cm. This drawing represents an unrealized project for a tomb in the form of an antique sarcophagus (plan and two elevations, front and side). The sarcophagus bears a medallion portrait of Jules Laurens, surrounded by his name. b) Graphite and watercolor. 32.2 x 23.9 cm. Project for a pyramidal monument with another Profile portrait in medallion. Inscribed on the plaque: "Jules Laurens, peintre, graveur, lithographe, 1818-1901". This project was never realized. c) Black and red inks on tracing paper. 39.1 x 19.6 cm. A few small tears at the edges of the tracing and two fold marks at the corners. This tracing shows the plan and elevation of a proposed obelisk-shaped tomb with a central medallion. This design was realized and can still be seen today in the communal cemetery of Saint-Didier in the Vaucluse region. The central medallion of the obelisk features a bronze portrait sculpted by Jules Laurens after a model by Jean-Jacques Henner. [FORMIGÉ, Jean Camille]. Project for François Allain-Targé's funeral monument in Parnay, near Saumur. Graphite and watercolor. 49.5 x 69.1 cm. Central fold. Fine insolation on the left side of the sheet. Master plan sketched in pencil top left. François Allain-Targé (1832-1902) was a politician, opponent of the Second Empire, prefect and Republican, close to Léon Gambetta and Georges Clemenceau. He is buried in the Parnay (Maine-et-Loire) cemetery, under a monument similar to the one in our drawing, adorned with a sc medallion.
