DUBAN, Félix - Lot 59
DUBAN, Félix [Lot of two drawings - Hôtel de Ville à Paris - la Galerie d'Apollon]. [ca. 1848]. Three drawings (38.1 x 32 cm; 16 x 35 cm; approx. 17 x 28 cm), graphite on tracing paper, mounted on two sheets (51 x 34 cm) (wormholes, missing parts, soiling on paper). "Hotel de ville / Paris / Figure a côté du cadran / restauration de cavalier". Tracing reproducing the left figure on the dial of the Hôtel de Ville in Paris; Two drafts probably of the stucco decoration for the Galerie d'Apollon. Commissioned in 1848 to restore the Galerie d'Apollon, Félix Duban succeeded in restoring cohesion to the weakened structure, particularly on the Seine side. The architect reinforced the weakened or cracked points of the barrel vault. A drawing with the inscription: "Borderie du Louvre". Winner of the Grand Prix d'Architecture in 1823, Félix Duban stayed in Italy between 1823 and 1828 as a boarder at the Académie de France in Rome. This decisive period in his training gave rise to an important series of architectural surveys and studies, comparable sets of which are preserved in the library of the École des Beaux-Arts.
