BOBIN, Prosper. [Circa 1880]. - Lot 47
BOBIN, Prosper. [Circa 1880]. "Projet de reconstruction de la Sorbonne - Façade latérale". Very large drawing. Black ink and gray wash. Dim. approx. 70 x 250 cm Large restored tears (drawing doubled). Monumental elevation, measuring over two meters in length, of a proposed reconstruction of the Sorbonne (façade on rue de la Sorbonne and rue Victor Cousin). Signed lower right: "Prosper Bobin". In the 1880s, an architects' competition was held to enlarge the Sorbonne. Prosper Bobin entered the competition and exhibited his designs (four frames) at the Salon des Artistes français in 1883. His designs were not accepted, however, as Henri-Paul Nénot won the competition and was commissioned to carry out the work. Prosper Bobin (1844-1923) was a French architect trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and a pupil of Paccard, Vaudoyer and Coquart. Chief architect of Bâtiments civils and Palais nationaux, he was also architect of the South of France railroads. Among his major projects were the Gare du Sud railway station in Nice (1890-1892), the Sainte-Anne de la Butte-aux-Cailles church in Paris (1892-1900), the Ferrari retirement home in Clamart (1877), and the bovine pathology building at the Alfort veterinary school (1900). He also took part in the 1900 Universal Exhibition with the Palais de l'Optique. Knight of the Legion of Honor (1898), he exhibited regularly at the Salon des artistes français.
