BÉLANGER, François-Joseph (1744-1818). (Attributed to) - Lot 46
BÉLANGER, François-Joseph (1744-1818). (Attributed to) Chinese bridge project. Late 18th century. Watercolor (25 x 34 cm). Watermark D&C Blauw. Handwritten mention of the height and bottom of the left side of the bridge. Handwritten note on back: "Folies St. Jammes, Neuilly-sur-Seine". François-Joseph Bélanger, one of the greatest landscape architects of his time, was a favorite among aristocrats and middle-class citizens, who built their own out-of-town follies, vacation homes set in English gardens with exotic touches. The Folie Saint-James park was laid out from 1782 at the request of speculator Baudard, known as the Saint-James, Treasurer General of the Navy, who called on Bélanger (who worked with Jean-Baptiste Chaussard) to build his superb residence on the road from Neuilly to Boulogne. Bélanger's design was based on the picturesque Anglo-Chinese gardens typical of the period. These included a Chinese vase, a Chinese ferry, an ice house and a Chinese pavilion, two other Chinese pavilions and the Chinese bridge. The drawing here, probably a draft, is very close to the one shown on plate 108 of Jean Charles Krafft's "Recueil d'Architecture civile [...]" (Paris, Bance, imprimerie du Crapelet, 1812), "Détails des Ponts du Jardin de Saint James", showing a Chinese bridge. Bélanger had also built two Chinese bridges and a Chinese tent in the nearby Parc de Bagatelle. Bibliography: Henri Cordier. "La Chine en France au XVIIIe siècle" (pp. 64-66). J.-C. Krafft.
