BLON - Lot 45
BLON [Tombeaux des philosophes ou Jardins maçonniques. Pair]. [France or Germany], 1814. In sheets in small folio format (54.5 x 41 and 39.5 x 53 cm), (slight oxidation of the paper, some soiling, small marginal tears, small missing corner). A set of two fine drawings in ink and wash, watercolor, on watermarked laid paper (D&CBeau or Blaw and coat of arms with foliage), signed BLON / (mai) 1814 in the scene decor, with triple black and gray painted frame and gouache sky. Very finely drawn and executed, suggesting the work of an architect or school-trained artist. Presents two imaginary buildings that resemble architectural follies, oscillating between neoclassical and neo-Gothic prefiguration, and bearing witness to the era of the drawings of a Martin Carême or strongly reminiscent of the independent genre of views from Lequeu's Architecture civile. The neo-classical peristyles at the center of the drawings, representing the entrance to the cenotaph, the typical symbols of the broken column, the obelisk, the triumphal arch, the references to the Temple... everything suggests that we are looking at an exercise in Freemason-inspired painting, the "tomb of the philosophers of the Enlightenment" or, at the very least, executed in a spirit of German idealism or in the aftermath of Enlightenment ideas.
