CHAPERON, Philippe. [GARNIER, Charles] - Lot 34
CHAPERON, Philippe. [GARNIER, Charles] [A drawing and sketch of a set for the Opéra]. (Paris), ca 1878. -Nouvel Opéra / Glacier. March 1878. Oblong folio sheet. Drawing (41 x 20 cm) in pencil, black ink and wash, with white gouache highlights (light soiling and small tears at corners). Large project with dimensions, toise and scale for the painted décor of an opera house's glacier or salon du glacier (where refreshments are served), in the neoclassical style, on the theme of the months of the year. Titled above and signed Ph Chaperon lower right. -Pencil and black ink sketch of the same design]. In large in-4 format, sketch (11 x 26 cm) in pencil and brown ink on ruled sheet (traces of folding, some soiling and uneven edges). Pencil sketch of carved group and balustrade on verso. A handwritten title in ink, apparently in Philippe Chaperon's hand, reads "Croquis de Mr Garnier architecte de l'Opéra". Although the Opéra Garnier was inaugurated in 1874, it was partly unfinished, and the glacier rotunda was not completed until 1889, decorated by Clairin and after Mazerolle. Although it appears to have been aborted or never realized, perhaps Chaperon's project had been envisaged by Garnier because of the decorations his friend had already created for the building.
