CHAPERON, Philippe or studio - Lot 33
CHAPERON, Philippe or studio [Décors for plays and operas]. Lot of 5 preparatory works for very large-scale painted stage sets, perhaps for a diorama. Some signed and dated. In sheets, various formats, drawings in pencil, ink and wash, watercolor, white gouache highlights, collages, handwritten annotations (some soiling, oxidation and wear, small tears, small marginal losses or occasional restorations on verso, not serious). -Frame of 3 views of Chicago. January 1893. Superb drawing (35 x 60 cm) made from 2 assembled sheets, in pencil, black ink, wash and watercolor, folded. In the lower margin "Curtain 18m wide between drapery and foreground. Curtain height 10m80". Signed Ph. Chaperon and dated 1893 in the drawing at lower left. Additions of paper and laminated shapes in the foreground. Part of the left side seems to be missing. 1893 was the year of the World's Fair in Chicago, perhaps a diorama project or show had been commissioned. -Temple of Phta. Ephaïstos...Aïda 1st Act 2nd tableau. Nouvel Opéra. (Paris, 1880). Impressive, almost stylized sketch and diagram (59 x 59 cm) with annotations and markings. Pencil, ink and pink gouache wash (damaged edges, oxidation of the paper). Created for the first performance of Verdi's grand opera at the Opéra Garnier in 1880, this "temple of Phta" was one of Chaperon's greatest successes. -Don Juan (a street in Burgos). Drawing (24.4 cm x 30 cm) in pencil, black ink and wash on paper. Architectural view. Old label with number. -Théâtre National de l'Opera (Ballet). June 1886. Drawing (23.6 x 28 cm) in pencil, black ink, watercolor and gouache highlights. View of a wooden boutique for the premiere of Les Jumeaux de Bergame, ballet-arlequinade. Antique label with number. -Patrie] Th(éatre) de l'Opera. 1899. Drawing (18 x 26 cm) in pencil, black ink, blue wash and white gouache highlights. Perspective view of a street with buildings reminiscent of Don Juan's Burgos setting.
