Jacques VILLON (1875-1963) - Lot 44
Jacques VILLON (1875-1963) La petite machine à battre, 1946 Oil on canvas. Signed lower right. Titled and dated on a Galerie Louis label. 36 x 62cm (Small accident top left) Copy of Galerie Louis Carré certificate dated November 15, 1958 Jacques Villon belongs to the generation of painters (Fernand Léger's generation) interested in modern machinery. His sensitivity to modernity is reflected here in the depiction of an agricultural machine (the wheat threshing machine), but the rural landscape and the machine do not exclude the peasant, nor the city in the distance. This symbolic trilogy can be compared, for example, with another painting entitled "The three orders: castle, church, countryside". There is also a symbolic and intellectual dimension to Villon's work, which he was able to represent thanks to the plastic audacities of the 20th century.
