Diem PHUNG-THI (1920-2002) Sculpture obtained from the assembly of the First Signs. Circa 1965. Painted wood and molded plaster. 37 x 32 x 12.5cm General bibliography - Nghê Thuât, "Diem Phùng Thi", ACCT, agence de la francophonie, France, 1997, related work p.108 - Diem Phung-Thi, Sculpture 1960-1971, Ed Union, Paris, 1971 Diem Phung Thi (1920-2002), born in Hué in 1920, gave up her career as a dentist to study art in Paris in 1959, first at the École Nationale Supérieur des Beaux-Arts, then from 1961 to 1963, with sculptor Antoniucci Volti. During this period, the Vietnam War was at its height, and the artist found in sculpture a way to respond to her powerlessness and guilt at being far from her family. She devoted herself to an abstract style, creating a set of 7 removable forms to form infinite compositions, "The Seven Forms", using materials such as wood, metal, stone, terracotta and B-52 bomb fragments. Her sculptures reflect the suffering of the Vietnamese people, a reflection on the harmony between man and nature, marked by a spiritual sensitivity specific to her origins. Her work is punctuated by themes of motherhood, children's play and spirituality. Her career was launched, and she exhibited at the Bernheim-Jeune gallery in 1966 and at numerous salons in France and abroad. Her work was shown in Vietnam from 1978 onwards, in Hanoi, Hué and Ho Chi Minh City. She came to be regarded as one of the leaders of modern Vietnamese art. Phung Thi decided to return to her homeland in 1992, and on her death in 2002, a large part of her work was donated to Hué, where it is now housed in the Diem Phung Thi Museum.
