Cao Dam VU (1908-2000) - Lot 29
Cao Dam VU (1908-2000) Peonies in a Red Vase, 1941 Ink and colors on fabric. Signed and dated lower right in Latin letters and Vietnamese. 54 x 43cm (Restorations) We would like to thank Mrs. Yannick Vu Jakober, the artist's daughter, who kindly confirmed the authenticity of this work based on a photograph, and who included it in the artist's Catalogue Raisonné, Éditions Yannick VU, September 2024, illustrated on page 168. VU Cao Dam began his career as a sculptor before turning to painting. A graduate of the École des Beaux-Arts de l'Indochine and a pupil of Victor Tardieu, VU presented a bronze head of "Jeune fille annamite" at the Exposition Coloniale Internationale in Paris in 1931. He won a scholarship and settled permanently in Paris in 1937. He abandoned sculpture in favor of oil painting and, above all, silk painting. His subjects remain essentially oriented towards Vietnamese culture: young girls dressed in traditional "ao dai" costume. Our work depicts peonies, a symbol of wealth or happiness. Created just four years after his arrival in France, VU poetically depicts a red lacquer vase in pastel tones. In the early part of his career, when silk was still the artist's preferred medium, Vu used inks and colors before turning to oils in the 1950s. The treatment of still life is softer and more subtle, with a blurred palette and a pastel chromatic range. The background features peonies, treated with a confident, controlled brushstroke. Signed in both Latin letters and Chinese ideograms, the artist crystallizes the dual Western and Far Eastern influences that mark her work.
