Jules CHERET (1836-1932) - Lot 12
Jules CHERET (1836-1932) The comedy Pastel on canvas. Signed lower left. 64 x 34cm (view) This pastel is related to one of the lithographs in the "Les Arts" suite, published by the poster masters at the Chaix printing house in 1899. The model had been designed in 1891, one of the four large (119× 81.5cm) decorative panels of the Comédie being from the same series.our pastel shows variations in the garland of masks from the lithograph. Chéret's first lithographic works were produced in the 1850s. He perfected his printing technique after acquiring a workshop in Paris in 1866. He was both a brilliant draughtsman and a great lithographic technician, and the most renowned of poster artists. His artistic inspiration came from Japanese prints and the light tones used by Impressionist painters. He created an unforgettable character, his "Chérette", a modern colombine inherited from Watteau and the 18th century, which became one of the emblems of the "Belle Époque".
